Make clippy "happy". (#1950) ...

* Make clippy "happy".

Address all clippy complaints that are not purely stylistic (or even
have corner cases with false positives). Ignore all "style" and "pedantic" lints.

* Fix tests.

* Undo unnecessary API change.
